Student Support & Counselling

School Counsellor

We have a Primary School Counsellor who works with our staff and students to assist their well-being through:

  • working co-operatively with the whole school community to create a safe and supportive learning environment
  • providing leadership implementing the School Behaviour Policy
  • providing leadership in the area of Child Protection and Students at Risk
  • providing leadership in teaching and learning to assist others in the management of students’ behaviour, wellbeing and safety

Our School Counsellor works with individuals and groups on a needs-basis, and is available to speak to parents and work with families in times of crisis. If required, the School Counsellor refers families to local psychologist, LJ Durik, CAMHS and AC Care to ensure students are supported by appropriate professionals.

Student Support

Students with High Intellectual Potential will be identified by class teachers and programs structured to suit their needs.
Teachers will identify Students at Risk who are having difficulty with their learning or social interaction and special programs are developed to meet these needs.

Learning Assistance Program (L.A.P)

The Learning Assistance Program is aimed at the schools Students at Risk (STAR) and Students with High Intellectual Potential (SHIP) programs. It provides extra educational opportunities for identified students. The program is run by volunteers working with the child’s teacher. If you are interested in being a volunteer please contact the front office and fill out the LAP forms. We currently have a severe shortage of LAP volunteers.

Pastoral Care Worker

Previously known as the Chaplain, the Pastoral Care Worker (PCW) is available at the school for 2 days a week. The role is to pastorally support the school in its aim to be a safe and supportive learning environment.

The PCW can be involved in a wide range of activities such as excursions, camps, one to one support and care, and classroom activities. The PCW is also able to provide families with information about the support services available in our community.

The PCW’s office is upstairs via the ‘Purple Carpet Area’ and you can contact the PCW by phoning the front office or leaving a note in the PCW box at the front office.

The following is a list of local and national supports for individuals and families in need. Child And Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS)

If you have any concerns about your child’s emotional or mental health, talk with close family or friends, the school counsellor or your local doctor. If you are still worried then help is available through CAMHS. CAMHS provides a free and confidential counselling service for children and young people up to 18 years of age and their families. Services are provided by child and family specialists including psychologists, social workers, nurses, psychiatrists, and family therapists who are experienced in helping children with emotional, behavioural or social difficulties.

We have a CAMHS therapist based in Naracoorte but all referrals go through the Mount Gambier office. You can contact them directly or, if the concerns are school-based, the school counsellor, class teacher or principal can make referrals.
